What Causes Sound In Dry Type Transformer? Indian Manufacturers Explain


People often ignore the removal of shipping bolts or shipping blocking material connected to the unit while installation of dry type transformers. Transformer coil and core assemblies are usually heavy in weight and needed extra support before shipment. The support prevents the unit from damage while transporting from manufacturing factory to the job site. For users, it is crucial to remove any temporary shipping bolts or holding materials before energizing transformer.

Moreover, it is critical to loosen or remove the bolts that are connected to resilient mounts, which are intended to transfer abrasion to the frame from the core and are placed on the transformer.

Some manufacturing companies use vibration isolators and install them in the transformer to lower the case vibration. These are precisely sized for apt loading at the fundamental frequency. From Where Does The Sound Produce?

Sound is generally caused by magnetostricition of the core laminations while energizing of the transformers. Magnetostriction occurs at double the frequency of the supply load: for instance- for 60Hz supply frequency, it vibrates at 120 cycles every second. Please note- when the density of the magnetic flux is higher, the frequency of the even number harmonics will also higher.

Acoustical absorbants are ideal controllers of transformer sound transmission. Such materials need to be mounted on reflecting surfaces to lower the reflecting sound and amplification.
