Dependency on Distribution Transformers in India

The transformer is critical equipment in electrical supply field. It is used to regulate and change the voltage levels from higher to lower and vice-versa. Transformer manufacturers in India are trending the whole power electric industry manufacturers. Thus, telecom, business, and electrical areas are surveyed to have the best flagship products. A distribution Transformer or service transformer is equipment that provides the last voltage transformation in the power distribution system. It steps down the voltage of mega power lines for the consumption in regular households, schools etc. if mounted on a utility pole they are called pole mount transformers. If the distribution lines are at ground level, then the transformer is referred as a pad-mount transformer.

Specification of Distribution transformer in India:

They have ratings less than 200 kVA normally. They are energized 24/7, reducing the iron loss is a very important feature in the designing process. Since they don’t operate at maximum load, they are well optimized for efficient behavior at lower loads.

Classification of distribution transformers in India based on the factors such as:

  • Insulation types – dry-type or liquid-immersed
  • Mounting at different location – pad, pole or underground vault
  • Number of Phases – single-phase or three-phase
  • Voltage standards
  • Basic impulse insulation level (BIL).

Use of Distribution Transformer in India:

This type of transformer mostly employed at a service drop. The line runs from the transformer to the customer’s location. They are most commonly used for the locations like the station, farmyards and outside households etc. below 30kVA. A number of customers relying on single transformer depend upon the number of users in the area nearby. A large complex or industry may require multiple installations of the distribution transformer.

Construction of Distribution Transformers:

They are usually made of steel sheets layered one over another with steel straps or glued together with resins. A wound C-shape core is efficient and economical to manufacture the transformer. The primary cores are wound with copper or aluminum wire. Then they are insulated with resin paper. Transformers can be designed low-grade levels for the submersion in water periodically. They are included with an off-loading tap for the minor changes between primary and secondary coils.

Difference between Power transformer and Distributed Transformer:

Power transformers are used in transmission network whereas distribution network used in low voltage network. The iron loss in Distribution network is less while operating at lower load for the maximum time. The size and insulation power of distributed transformer is less than the power transformer. The efficiency ratio for distribution is almost 90% while power transformer has only 55 % efficiency.

The industry of Distribution transformers manufacturers in India gained a lot of customer pool. Due to set up of many industries in India, they require stable energy which is provided with the help of transformers. The prominent usage of transformers in India also increased the standard of electrical distribution system. As electricity is a necessary part of everyday life, this type of critical equipment plays a huge role in regulating and keeps a steady flow of electricity for powering the equipment.
